Every child needs a hero -- now more than ever. The events of the past year have refocused attention on the qualities of a true hero, and on the qualities that make this nation great.
"50 American Heroes Every Kid Should Meet" offers newspapers a chance to engage young readers, giving them stories of men and women who will capture their imagination while at the same time teaching them about the nation and crucial struggles it has faced.
The stories -- which can run consecutively or periodically, whichever works best for your needs -- are taken from the book "50 American Heroes Every Kid Should Meet," written by Dr. Dennis Denenberg and Lorraine Roscoe and published by Millbrook Press, in Brookfield, Conn. The Millbrook Press has granted the PNA Foundation NIE Committee with a non-exclusive license for a term of five years to use, reprint, disseminate, publish and sublicense the work.
"50 American Heroes" offers readers the chance to explore the lives of everyday men and women who have made a positive impact on American history. The heroes include world leaders, scientists, artists, sports figures -- something to engage the interest of every young reader.
In addition to dramatic tales of personal courage, you'll receive a photograph of each hero that can be used with each of the installments. These stories and photos can be used as a stand alone feature or with content you may already be running, by adding special emphasis and engaging copy for young readers on special holidays and anniversaries, such as Martin Luther King Day, Presidents' Day, or the first day of baseball season.
Unlike serials, they do not need to be run consecutively, and they are timeless. And the men and women profiled are a diverse cast sure to appeal to the widest range of interests.
The idea for the American Heroes serialized stories originated with the Lancaster (Pa.) New Era's Editor Ernest Schreiber in response to the renewed interest of readers in American heroes, past and present, following Sept. 11. In an effort to bring heroes into the classroom, Schreiber and Dr. Ann Marie Steele, education and community services project coordinator for Lancaster Newspapers Inc., developed free teacher guides and weekly student contests to complement the stories. Student readership, measured by contest participation, exceeded any previous book serialization.
