Brighter Pennsylvania - Statement of Principles

Brighter Pennsylvania

[Download the official "Statement of Principles" that was mailed to General Assembly candidates and incumbents.]

The Pennsylvania Newspaper Association is a 501(c)(6) trade association representing over 300 Pennsylvania newspapers.

Our mission is to advance the interests of Pennsylvania newspapers, promote the importance of a free and independent press and provide a forum for critical and innovative thinking about the future of journalism and the newspaper industry.

A free and independent press is one of the most important pillars of a democratic society. The founders of this country felt this function was so important to the success of our government that they guaranteed freedom of the press in the very first amendment to the Constitution, among a list of freedoms so fundamental that they became known as our "Bill of Rights."

A free and independent press is effectively silenced, however, when meaningful access to government records and proceedings is curtailed.

We are asking all Pennsylvania General Assembly candidates and incumbents to affirm their commitment to these basic principles.
